About the Arts Greenhouse
The Arts Greenhouse is a free hip-hop music education program serving Pittsburgh teens through the resources of Carnegie Melon University. We use Carnegie Mellon’s recording studio and pre-production equipment to take a small but dedicated group of Pittsburgh teens (ages 13-18) through the process of creating beats and recording a hip-hop music CD. The program is taught by J. Armstead Brown, professional beatmaker and bandleader of Eviction Notice.
Supporting workshops in special topics relating to hip-hop are lead by Luqman Abdus-salaam, professional poet, recording artist and community activist.
At the end of the program in December, the best student work will be made into a CD: Volume 2, An Arts Greenhouse Mixtape. If your music is selected to appear on the CD, you will receive 25 free copies of the disc. Placement on the CD is selected by the program instructors, and is not a guaranteed for all program participants.
The Arts Greenhouse reserves a non-exclusive right to distribute all music created with the program to publicize or fundraise for the Arts Greenhouse program. This means that participants retain rights to sell or use their music however they see fit, excepting the selling of exclusive rights.
